      This method cover the procedure for the determination of particle size distribution of coarse and all in aggregates by sieving or screening that is called sieve analysis of coarse aggregate .

Apparatus of sieve 

  • balance- The balance or scale shall be such that it is readable and accurate to 0.1 percent of the weight of the test sample
  • sieve -as per is code various size of sieve available but we are testing sieve is 40mm,20mm,12.5mm,10mm 4.75mm,2.36mm for 20mm


  Test Procedure coarse aggregate 

  • The sample shall be brought to an air-dry condition before weighing and sieve .this may be achieved either by drying at room temperature by heating at temperature of 100'c to 110'c 
  • The aggregate sample taken 3000 grams clean aggregate    
  • each sieve shall be shaken separately over a clean tray until not more then a trace passes but in any case for a period not less then two minutes
  • The shaking shall be done with the varied motion back ward and forwards ,left to right circular clock wise and anti clockwise and with frequently changing direction 
  • material shall not be forced through the sieve by hand pressure but on sieve coarse then 20mm placing particle is permitted
  • on completion of sieving material retained each sieve together with any material cleaned form the mesh, shall be weighed 
  • in order to prevent building of the sieve apparatus  by over loading the amount of aggregate  place on each sieve shall be such that the Wight of aggregate retained on the sieve at completion of the operation is not greater than the value given for that .
